Blog Chain - What are Books to you?

So, apparently I DID have something to post today...I just totally forgot LOL

It's my turn on the blog chain, and for this round, Kate wants us to fill in the blank:

Books are __________.

It's been really interesting reading everyone's responses. I sort of thought everyone would have the same answer and that hasn't been the case at all. Everyone has had wonderful posts on this.

For me, books are........an addiction.

Seriously. I crave them. I think about them ALL the time, whether it's about reading them or writing them. I dwell on the characters and worlds I've immersed myself in for long after I've closed the book. I dream about them. I could talk for hours about them. I let my house crumble around my ears when I'm in the middle of a good one. I carry one with me at all times. My house is bursting at the seams with them and I still want more! My dream is to have a huge library in my house, with rolling ladders to reach all the shelves :D

The second pay day hits, I go out and buy at least one new (or new to me) book. I have kept the library cards from every place I have ever lived (and I've moved a lot). When I don't have something to read, I go a little crazy. I'll buy books I'm not horribly interested in because if I need something to read and that's all that's available, I can't just walk away empty handed.

I'm seriously addicted....and I LOVE it :)

Be sure to check out Laura's awesome answer from yesterday, and stop by Shaun's tomorrow to see what books are to him :)

How about you? How would you fill in the blank?

. . . the source of all life!

Okay, how about . . .

. . . the teleporter to other worlds. Yeah, I like the Star Trek analogy. Each and every book is a different world, a different experience, a journey beyond the everyday and, often, into the extraordinary.

Yes, I'm definitely addicted to books, and I don't want to be cured!

I would definitely say an addiction too, but also, an escape. I love being able to escape to a new place with new people (or places and people I've gotten to know) from the comfiness of my own bed. =)

Ah, yes, an addiction. I would agree with that! :D

Admitting you have a problem is the first step...

Of course, in your case I don't think your addiction is a problem :)

And I completely agree with you about having a huge library with a rolling ladder. I would love to have something like that.

Ha! Addicted is right!

I'm trying to think of how I could answer that question, but the ones I think of are not unique

Books are ... life, love, happiness, escape, freedom.

...friends

They are warm, comforting, entertaining, teachers, and on and on and on.

Yes, books are my friends!

Hmm, I wonder how much I could get paid for opening an BLA (Book Lovers Anonymous) workshop to cure their addictions. Then again, people would be too busy reading to pay attention to the seminar :) Oh well...

Aww! I'm the same way. Laughed about the library card hoarding (I do that, too). Books are portals to other worlds. Cheesy, I know, but it's true. You're not alone in your book addiction. ;)

Girl, I hear you! If it wasn't for my library I would be in the poor house!

OMG, I totally agree - books are an addiction for me too. I actually get kind of twitchy if I go too many days without a new book in hand. And I also have held on to all my old library cards!
